Curriculum Vitae Ton van Naerssen I started my private consultancy firm Avanna in Spring 2010 while maintaining a part-time position as senior research fellow in the development geography, Nijmegen School of Management, Radboud University Nijmegen (RU). Until 2008, I was associate professor and co-ordinator of the master programme ‘Globalisation and Development’ at the same university. My major fields of interest included globalisation processes, urban environment and health, and international migration. My teachings concerned courses on development geography, globalisation and development, global cities and small-scale and informal activities, and supervising more than hundred M.A. thesis mainly in the field of poverty, development and emancipation. My research experiences are in mainly in Southeast Asia but I also gained experience in Africa and Latin America. After my Ph. D. research on industrialisation and regional development in Peninsular Malaysia, I went to The Philippines focusing on public participation in the urban development of Manila and Cebu City. I also did some research on urban and regional development in Indonesia. My current interest mainly concerns the impact of international migration on development processes. I was previously member of the editorial boards of the journals ‘Derde Wereld’ (Third World) and the Journal of Economic and Social Geography (TESG). Next to publishing articles I co-edited several books, among others on Healthy Cities in Developing Countries (2002), Asian Migrants and European Labour Markets (2005), and Global Migration and Development (2008). In much of my research I worked together with non-governmental organisations. As a consultant I worked for Dutch co-financing organisations and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During many years I was also involved in human rights activities. During ten years (2001-2012) I was member of the project advisory committee (PAC) of Oxfam/Novib. From June 2010 till August 2011 I worked for the Global Society Foundation in Utrecht as part-time coordinator for research, policy and strategy.
